What Is Facial Feminization Surgery?
Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS) is a specialized surgical procedure designed to alter facial features and create a more feminine appearance for individuals assigned male at birth or those seeking to align their external appearance with their gender identity. FFS is a type of Gender affirmation surgery, also known as gender confirmation surgery. The goal is to give transgender individuals the physical appearance and functional abilities of the gender they know themselves to be. Listed below are some of the available procedures for transwomen (MTF) and transmen (FTM) to aid in their journey.
Some of the most common procedures for facial feminization surgery include:
Brow – Probably the most important facial feminization procedure is the feminization of the brow bone. Depending on your particular anatomy, obtaining the best result involves a combination of repositioning and shaving the bones of the brow (frontal sinus setback surgery). The eyebrows themselves can also be lifted concurrently to obtain the ideal feminization of this region.
Nose – Rhinoplasty can be performed to reduce the width of the nose, feminize the tip, lower the bridge, and even improve your breathing.
Cheeks – Full cheeks can enhance a beautiful, feminine appearance. There are many ways to augment the cheeks, however many of these techniques have disadvantages such as being temporary (fillers), drooping over time with gravity and needing multiple sessions (fat injections), or carrying a lifetime risk of infection or implant movement (cheek implants).
Lips – Lip augmentation can be performed with fillers or your own tissues to enhance and feminize lip appearance.
Jaw and Chin – The lower jaw bone (mandible) can be contoured and “lifted” to feminize the shape of the jaw border and soften the chin structure.
Permanent Makeup and Scar Camouflage
As you embark on your facial feminization journey, you are probably aware that scarring is a natural part of the recovery process. Fortunately, permanent makeup offers a solution to effectively conceal these scars. Known as Scar or Skin Camouflage Micropigmentation, this specialized form of medical tattooing, also referred to as Corrective Pigment Camouflage (CPC), Corrective Camouflage, Skin Repigmentation, Scar Camouflage, Skin Camouflage, Camouflage Tattooing, or Skin Color Tattooing, can expertly blend and conceal scars, providing you with a flawless and natural-looking complexion.
Medical tattooing is a cosmetic procedure used to change the pigment of an affected area of skin. It can be used in multiple ways: to mask hair loss and thinning on the scalp, or to conceal scars after facial feminization surgeries, among others. By utilizing advanced micropigmentation methods, a skilled permanent makeup artist can expertly blend the pigments into the surrounding skin, creating an illusion that helps conceal the scar. The process involves depositing color pigments into the scar tissue using specialized needles and equipment, matching the natural skin tone and texture. The pigments are carefully selected to ensure they blend in with your complexion for a realistic outcome. Over time, the scars become less noticeable as the pigments blend with the surrounding skin.
Scar Camouflage Aftercare
Proper aftercare is essential to ensure optimal healing and long-lasting results for scar camouflage with permanent makeup. After your procedure, it's important to follow these guidelines:
Keep the area clean: Gently cleanse the treated area with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid using harsh products or scrubbing the area to prevent irritation.
Apply ointment: Use the recommended ointment provided by your technician to keep the treated area moisturized and promote healing. Apply a thin layer of ointment as directed, making sure not to over-apply.
Avoid excessive moisture: Avoid soaking the treated area in water, such as swimming or prolonged showers, for the first few days. Excessive moisture can interfere with the healing process.
Protect from sun exposure: Shield the treated area from direct sunlight or tanning beds. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect the pigmented area from UV rays.
Avoid picking or scratching: It is crucial to refrain from picking, scratching, or rubbing the treated area. Let the scabs naturally flake off instead.
Avoid makeup and skincare products: Avoid applying makeup, creams, or skincare products directly on the treated area during the initial healing period. These products may contain ingredients that could interfere with the healing process or affect the pigmentation.

Hello!
I’m Fiora, a transwoman who had FFS a few years ago, and I want to write a bit about my experience with Hallie at Adorn Permanent Cosmetics with regard to scar cover-up.
Some years ago I went to Dr. DiMaggio in Buenos Aires for “the works” as they call it. And “the works” included a hairline scar that went from ear to ear. Over time the scar softened and flattened out and turned rather white. So I went to Hallie at Adorn for scar camouflage.
I found Hallie to be really fun to chat with, skilled and knowledgeable in her craft. Her studio was full of visibly queer artists who I vibed with like extended family. She addressed my concerns and expertly matched my skin tone. Her work was efficient and excellent. We did an initial session and a touch-up a few weeks later.
When it was finished she greatly improved the appearance of my scars. Afterward I didn’t feel it was necessary to use concealer on the areas like I had been doing every day. It was a great relief.
I also went to Hallie for lash line enhancement and microblading. She was sensitive to my needs and does beautiful work all around. I’d like to see her again to cover up a few new scars.
